Social Activities – Global Social Club
The social club at GEC is called the Global Social Club. We organise all kinds of activities for our students to help them explore Kota Kinabalu. It is a great way to practise your English while you have fun!
These include:
- monthly welcome party for new students
- weekly sports activities
- sightseeing trips
- weekend trips
- regular movie nights
- evening dance cruises
- special cultural events
Michael is the enthusiastic organiser of many of GEC’s social activities. Whether it’s day trips, weekend trips or night-time events, Michael is always keen to join the students and enjoy the many fun activities on offer!
Sports Activities – Global Social Club
At GEC we have many teachers that love sport and there are lots of sporting activities for you to join. Below are the main activities we offer but if there is anything else you would like to try e.g. skydiving, scuba diving, kayaking, bushwalking, skiing etc just ask and if we can’t organise it ourselves we will put you in contact with the people that can. Many of GEC students and staff are participating in GEC team competitions across all different sports so its just a matter of joining the GEC team and having exercise whilst having fun!
Futsal (Indoor Soccer)
GEC teams are always participating in the many friendly on-going competitions held locally here in Kota Kinabalu. We always field a strong team with talented students from throughout Europe, Asia and of course Brazil and have a proud tradition of success. It is a great way for students to exercise and have fun together, the competitions are competitive but everyone is out just to have fun and meet new friends!
Basketball
GEC has a basketball team that compete in local friendly competitions held locally here in Kota Kinabalu. The competition is a 20 match season (depending on the number of teams) that leads into playoffs to the finals. The atmosphere is friendly yet competitive and is a great way to enhance team building skills and just to have fun! GEC basketball team is very successful with a great mixture of international students from Europe, South America and Asia.
Badminton
It can almost be fair to say that badminton is the national sport of Malaysia! The amount of people that follow badminton in Malaysia is quite substantial. GEC organises badminton sessions for our students to all have a match together at one of the local community halls nearby GEC. Our staff and students play every Monday night and it is fantastic fun and great exercise! GEC provides all the necessary equipment for rental such as racquets and shuttles so just come along and enjoy having a hit around with fellow staff and students!
Squash/Tennis
Some GEC staff are keen squash and tennis players and are always happy to organise a game on Friday afternoons if students are interested. We usually play tennis at the one of the tennis courts nearby GEC, set amongst the trees and beautiful skyline that Kota Kinabalu has to offer!
